Buzz Bros Band
Guitarist and composer Marnix Busstra is the musical genius behind the band. All compositions played by the Buzz Bros Band are his. Among his many musical highlights are his collaborations with award-winning vibist Mike Manieri, and vocalist Dianne Reeves, who recognized his craftsmanship as a composer. The electric guitar is his main instrument. To spice things up he occasionally uses an Irish bouzouki and a custom-built electric sitar. For more information on Marnix, check out www.marnixbusstra.nl
Marnix’s brother, Berthil, pianist and co-founder of the band, is a veritable Fender Rhodes specialist, one of the very best in the Dutch jazz scene. Berthil has the ability to express the kind of irrepressible curiosity and creativity that keeps him pushing the musical boundaries of Buzz Bros Band. The Busstra brothers found a rhythm section that fits in perfectly. These truly heavy cats are drummer Chris Strik and bassiplayer Frans van Geest, who replaced former bassplayer René Dissel in 2008.
In the Buzz Bros Band, Chris plays brushes only – even the heaviest of grooves. He communicates musical emotions with complete sincerity and charismatic warmth. His ability to rise to the occasion provides a true treat for the audience who typically votes him sweetheart of the band. To learn more about Chris, please visit www.chrisstrik.com.
Add this to the original creativity of bassplayer Frans van Geest, and you get an incredibly happening rhythm section with a completely individual, versatile, and swinging acoustic groove.
The past years, the Buzz Bros Band already has had its share of success. The quartet’s intense music leaves the audience in awe, wherever they play.
The band’s first CD, Castle In The Air, on the high end Turtle Records label, was received very well, generating numerous positive reviews. This audiophile album, a Super Audio Surround CD, provides a hyper-realistic sound stage that makes you feel as if you’re listening to an intimate live concert.
The Same New Story is the title of the band’s DVD, again on Turtle Records (2005). It’s a registration of a live concert, beautifully filmed in a deserted factory hall that was converted into a night club for the occasion. A review in de Volkskrant, one of Holland’s leading newspapers, described the album as ‘by far the most immaculate jazz DVD of 2004.’ In April 2009, the band recorded their new album, which will be released later in 2009.
The Buzz Bros Band was founded in 2001 by Marnix Busstra and his brother, pianist Berthil – a cooperation that prompted the band’s name.
The band has a very recognizable sound, and the four musicians are definitely groundbreakers in the Dutch jazz scene. The music they play can best be described as…
“adventurous, freely interpreted electric acoustic funky jazz with an ethnic touch”
