Scallymatic Orchestra
The 40th dying day of guitar god Jimi Hendrix was the reason for guitarist/arranger Mathijs Duringhof to start Scallymatizing the work of this legend for his band. The cross-over of vintage rock with soul, jazz and ‘space’, the grooves and energy, musicality and expiriment, great riffs and beautiful songs, all are elements that fit the Scallymatic glove like nothing else. It’s the Scallymatic Sound: a fresh mix of soul, jazz and 70s grooves.
Especially for this project Scallymatic Orchestra works with singer Soul Mack. This young Dutch gifted singer has hardly been noticed yet, although he really is the Arthur Conley of the Lowlands. During the week he is a warehouseman for a ladies underwear trader, in the weekends he sings like a star.
Scallymatic Orchestra likes being out of bounds, and will be unpredictable. Surprising musical choices keep themselves and their audiences on edge. At the same time the band is capable of staying true to their own identity and sound (the so-called Scallymatic Sound: a fresh mix of soul, jazz and 70s grooves).
The balance between tightly arranged and spinning out of control keeps every concert energetic and spontaneous. That’s what makes Hendrix’ repetoire interesting for Scallymatic Orchestra. This will not be another covershow, but a truly unique merge of Hendrix and SO: soul, jazz and vintage rock anno now, paying hommage to one great soul in music.
The first single ‘Freedom’ is out, the album is waiting for approval of the Hendrix Estate. In the mean time the band members, aka Scallies, earn their marks in musicland. They play/played with a.o. Wouter Hamel, Chef Special, Caro Emerald, Ruben Hein en Shirma Rouse.
Scallymatic Orchestra presented their debut album ‘Annie get your gun’ in april 2009. On this album the band recorded original compositions by guitarist/bandleader Mathijs Duringhof, and work with guests such as Paul van Kessel, Benny Sings, Han Litz and Stefan Schmid. The album was also released in Japan, through P-Vine Records.
